I got a big surprise this morning August 14th 2014, when going through my emails. Opening the Newsletter from Canadian Geographic I could see both my picture and my name displayed under the title: PHOTO OF THE MONTH FOR JULY 2014!
The image of my very first Wild Polar Bear captured in the Arctic, made it to the top!
This special honor only goes to those who have been previously picked for "Photo of the Week", which my image was on July 18th.
Not even knowing that my work had been picked for the weekly price, the surprise this morning was twice as big!
This is what GanGeo is saying in their Newsletter caption:
"PHOTO OF THE MONTH FOR JULY
Enjoying Life...
The July photo of the month captured our hearts and made us want to head north for wildlife viewing! Photo club member Nina Stavlund, captured this wild polar bear near Beechey Island, Nunavut as the animal relaxed and enjoyed the Arctic air."

Nina Stavlund was first published in "Under the Hat" Magazine August 2013, after being among the winners in a contest run here on FAA.
The winning image was her "Lady in Pink", under the title: Traditional Composition.
After this delightful happening, the Magazine wanted to make a mini-feature about Nina and some of her art works, for September 2013. The title of the issue is: Unconventional Composition. This in itself is interesting considering that it was the complete opposite that first got Nina in contact with the magazine.
Nina is featured with 4 pages including her Bio and a variety of art-works, which has been critiqued by the Magazine.
A little teaser is included in this article. To see the full feature, please follow the link.

Nina Stavlund won 1st Place in the Contest - The one you really wanted for the TV commercial on FineArtAmerica today July 12 - 2013. Entering the TV contest and win, is almost impossible if you don't spend 24/7 tracking down your social network asking them to vote for you. In Nina's opinion, it becomes more a popularity contest than a contest of the best art work. Due to this, Nina does not participate in contests where vote solicitation is allowed. Winning first place in a contest where the participant can not even vote for their own image, is very exciting, and should produce good quality winners. Nina is very proud to win this contest and thank the host for making such an interesting contest and the fellow participants that voted on her image.

Nina Stavlund did a presentation for ArtEast Ottawa May 28 - 2013, and this is what the organizer Robert McAlpine states after her talk:
"Nina Stavlund gave a marvelous retrospective presentation last night at ArtEast of her stellar photographic career. Her images held the audience breathless and her travels around the world were inspirational. When she said that she ended a boring job to travel the world and spend her time devoting herself to photo-art I could just feel the envy in the room. Well done Nina and many thanks for the inspiration."
